Sometimes laws are meant to be broken. Meet a passionate crew of illegal urban beekeepers in Brooklyn, New York working on their very first honey harvest for their restaurants. Find out why raising bees on NYC rooftops is important for Mother Earth. And be inspired to get into the illegal “bees”ness of urban beekeeping in your own backyard or rooftop. It’s not only fun, but dangerous, especially if you don’t like wearing bee suits!

There are many things that you never would have suspected lie beneath the harbor, including a 350-foot steamship, 1,600 bars of silver, a freight train, and four-foot-long cement-eating worms.

In 1865, a freight train was carrying baggage and failed to realize that the Peekskill drawbridge was open, killing two men.

Dead bodies, surveillance systems, stripped cars, piles of rebar, a dead giraffe, and the last remnants of Dreamland are some of things you’ll find there.

Brooklyn native, Ronny Beberman, one of the last real seltzer delivery man left in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, he fell off his truck, the first time that’s ever happened to him in nearly 40 years of work, and now his clients are left without proper seltzer.

Mr. Beberman drives the last real seltzer truck in New York, a wooden-slatted affair with crooked racks and side doors that are stuck open — the easier to strap the worn wooden cases to the side.

For nearly 40 years, he has delivered seltzer in thick, old siphon bottles to thousands of Brooklynites, each customer receiving a case of 10 every other week for $25, cash.

But on Sept. 15, just before the start of the Jewish High Holy Days, one of the busiest times of the year, Brooklyn’s Gunga Din of soda water went down, and now several hundred customers are resorting to rationing or even privation.

“The first couple of days, I was drinking it slow and making it last,” said Joshua M. Bernstein, 31, of Crown Heights, a food writer and a customer of Mr. Beberman’s for three years. “We’re down to our last bottle, so we’re saving it for a special occasion.”

Matt Levy, 29, a tour guide and fourth-generation Brooklynite, said he was rationing the case that Mr. Beberman delivered to him in Bushwick two weeks ago. He had five bottles left.

“We’re in a seltzer drought, and we have to prepare for it,” Mr. Levy said. “We have one of these little seltzer-making machines at home, but nothing is as good as Ronny’s seltzer.”

Ever wonder what Manhattan looked like before it was full of buildings and skyscrapers? The Mannahatta Project has done that for you. An interactive map and website, you can explore all points in Manhattan to see what it used to look like.

“The goal of the Mannahatta Project has never been to return Manhattan to its primeval state. The goal of the project is discover something new about a place we all know so well, whether we live in New York or see it on television, and, through that discovery, to alter our way of life. New York does not lack for dystopian visions of the future…. But what is the vision of the future that works? Might it lie in Mannahatta, the green heart of New York, and with a new start to history, a few hours before Hudson arrived that sunny afternoon four hundred years ago?”

- from Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City

Over the last eight months and brazen subway robber has hit 14 victims. His main course of attack is to hit those that are preoccupied with other things.

Police said the suspect — a black man in his 20s — held up his latest victim on the “F” train in Jamaica, Queens.

The suspect targets mostly women and in broad daylight. His main advantage is that people are isolated because of their newspapers, ipods, cell phones, etc. They don’t pay attention to their surroundings, which maked them easy targets.
