Blind devotion at Penn State
When you blindly give your devotion to someone or something, you will never be able to step back, see what’s actually happening, and make any rational decisions. Rioting over this devotion just makes things worse. Be careful who and what you worship and be mindful of who gets your undying devotion.
Looking back on the entire situation, McQueary was promoted and Sandusky retired when everyone thought he’d be a head coach soon. Sandusky was allowed to continue his criminal behavior. Everyone agreed to look the other way and no one ever attempted to actual solve any crimes that had taken place.
So what should the so-called highly revered and untouchable Paterno have done? The correct response in the very beginning from Joe Paterno should have been to call the police and keep the grad student in his office. He then could call whomever above him he needed to and tell them to get to his office right away. When the police arrived, he should have said to the grad student, “Tell the police what you just told me.”
If Joe Paterno really had as much pull and was worshiped so much at Penn State, then there would never have been a problem with him not completely following the chain of command. Instead, Paterno chose to turn a blind eye to what was occurring, did the bare minimum necessary, and allow things to continue as they were.
This is who Joe Paterno really is and this is, indeed, his legacy.
