MONCKS CORNER, S.C., Nov. 16 (UPI) — A South Carolina firefighter who was fired after being charged with having sex with his girlfriend in a half-built mansion has escaped a charge of fornication.

Fate took a bad turn for Paul Sloan, 25, in September when a fire broke out in the partially completed mansion in Hanahan, S.C. Sloan went to police to say his DNA would be inthe structure since he and his girlfriend had previously been there to have sex, the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier reported.

He and his now former girlfriend were each charged with burglary, defined in the state as unlawfully entering a building or dwelling with the intent to commit a crime. Police said the intended crime in this case was fornication between an unmarried man and woman.

Prosecutors declined to pursue the fornication charge and Sloan pleaded guilty to a single charge of unlawful entry into an enclosed place, which carries a $200 fine.

The fire is still being investigated and Sloan said he hopes to have his record expunged and return to firefighting, the newspaper said.
